Sea Kayak Improver Adventure Details

Our improver courses are designed to develop your existing skills and knowledge, to improve your confidence and ability, both on and off the water. Each course is different as we tailor our aims for each day depending on what the group want to work on. We might look at boat handling skills, rescue techniques, navigation and tidal planning or simply take your current skills into a more challenging environment. Your day is based around a journey to explore some of the best bits of Trow Rocks; you will learn and practice new skills as you paddle. Our friendly, experienced kayak coaches will deliver the course in a fun and relaxed way to help build your confidence and get the most out of your paddling. This course will develop the following skills:

  • Equipment knowledge
  • How to launch and land your kayak
  • Basic kayak control & paddling techniques
  • Learn the basics of how to predict the tide and plan a journey
When you arrive at the meeting location (detailed below) you will be met by a member of our team and they will fit you with your equipment and you will be given a short safety briefing and explanation in the use of the equipment before getting onto the water. You will be taught how to sit comfortably, control and stay safe in your kayak as well as hopefully interacting with some of the local wildlife.

Prerequisite (what experience should I have)

  • Suitable for ages 15+
  • Children under 18 are required to have a parent or legal guardian on the session.
  • The Improver Course is for people who have done a little kayaking before. You might have been on a kayaking course in the past and have a knowledge of the basics but need time to consolidate and practice.
  • You will be happy in force 2 conditions (8-10 mph wind, small glassy waves but no white caps). You would be happy to paddle 15km in a day and you are able to turn, stop and move forwards and backwards.

Venue location, parking and your arrival details

A great coastal location for a fun sea kayaking experience. Trow Quarry sees some great swells. The coast is abundant with wildlife, and the occasional pod of playful dolphin, and seals can be spotted! Great for enjoying the local birds, there's always a team of various gulls close by. The impressive Kestrel can be spotted here, swooping and diving along the cliff tops, and if you're lucky you might come a

cross the resident 'Little Owl' too!

You'll find the team parked at Trow Quarry car park, this is pay and display. South shields seafront is also well served with public transport including bus links and the local ferry from north shields fish quay.
