SUP Safety and Rescue Day Details


This training course aims to provide paddlers with the key safety and rescue skills required to operate safely and to be able to deal with common emergencies. We hope this will increase learning and enjoyment for participants as well as enabling extra practice and reflection time on new skills. The course has two purposes:

  • To provide you with the necessary skills which will enable you to ensure the safety of yourself and others
  • To provide the paddler with the appropriate rescue skills which can be used to help themselves and/or others in difficulty
General theory and planning
  • Safety
  • Rescue protocols
Bank-based rescues
  • Coach a swimmer to shore
  • Rescue a swimmer with a rigid aid
  • Rescue a swimmer using a throw line
Boat-based rescues
  • Rescue a swimmer from the water
  • Rescue a capsized paddler using a deep-water rescue
  • Rescue an unconscious or entrapped paddler from their boat d. Use of towlines
  • Self-rescue
  • All-in rescue




What should I bring wth me


  • Swimwear for under your wetsuit
  • A big fluffy towel for afterwards
  • Soft shoes to wear that might get a bit wet (no flip flops or crocs please)
  • Sun screen




Prerequisite (what experience should I have)


  • SUP-based participants need to have attended an intro course or be of equivalent ability due to the paddling environment and the SUP control required to complete the course
  • Minimum age 18 years old
  • First aid certificate is not compulsory, but it's strongly recommended for all paddlers
  • Be able to swim in normal paddling clothing suitable for the prevailing conditions




Venue location and your arrival details


We'll be spending the day at our riverside venue, the Sea Cadets Centre, Chester-le-Street. There is plenty of pay and display parking, perfect amenities for the classroom based learning and this is a great stretch of water for learning the rescue techniques.  Donald Owen Clarke Centre (sea cadets building), Riverside. Chester-le-Street (DH3 3QR) 




What's included


We provide you with all the paddle-boarding and safety equipment.

  • Wetsuit – please check your wetsuit requirements in the sizing chart below, you will be asked to provide your wetsuit size required during the booking process.
  • Buoyancy aid
  • Paddle-board with fin, paddle, and ankle strap
  • All rescue equipment required, including throw rope
  • We'll supply all classroom based equipment
  • Tea/coffee and refreshments
  • Pictures from your session will be available to download from our Flickr account
