Canoe White Water Grade 1 Adventure Details

A great canoe adventure for those who want to dip their toe into the world of white water! Get out on the water and give white water canoeing a go on our journey from Durham to Chester-le-Street. Our aim is to give you all the information and experience you need to decide if you would like to invest further in this sport. It’s fun, and a lot easier than you think! The session will be led by one of our qualified instructors. Please remember these sessions are grade 1 and aimed at newcomers to the sport. If you are wanting to learn specific skills or want to learn something specific, then please look at our other courses. The session will be on the river, providing a fantastic location with grade 1 white water sections. You will be on the water for most of the day, which will include paddling and some bank-based coaching.  As well as having a great journey we’ll also cover some training and improve your skills:

  • Equipment knowledge
  • Launching and landing your canoe
  • Basic paddle strokes and skills
  • Safety
When you arrive at our venue you will be met by a member of our team and they will fit you with your equipment and you will be given a short safety briefing and explanation in the use of the equipment before getting onto the water. You will be taught how to sit comfortably, control and stay safe in your canoe as well as hopefully interacting with some of the local wildlife.

Prerequisite (what experience should I have)

  • None, just happy to be on the water.
  • Suitable for ages 5+
  • Children under 18 are required to have a parent or legal guardian on the session. 

What’s included

We provide you with all the canoeing and safety equipment.

  • Wetsuit – please check your wetsuit requirements in the sizing chart below, you will be asked to provide your wetsuit size required during the booking process.
  • Buoyancy aid
  • Canoe and paddle (in wet and windy conditions you will be supplied with a cagoule.)
  • Hot freshly prepared lunch on a secluded section along the bank of the river
  • Pictures from your session will be available to download from our Flickr account

What should I bring to the adventure?

  • Swimwear for under your wetsuit
  • A big fluffy towel for afterwards
  • Soft shoes to wear inside your canoe that might get a bit wet (no flip flops or crocs please)
  • Warm clothing and jumpers on colder days
  • Feel free to bring shorts and tee on a warm sunny day (no wetsuit required)
  • A flask and some bottled water to take out on your canoe

Venue location and your arrival details

A beautiful location for an enjoyable white water canoe journey. This section of the River Wear is great for a Grade 1 white water experience. The river is abundant with wildlife, and provides a great little heaven for spotting kingfishers, otters, heron, salmon and sea trout, mute swans, muscovy ducks, great black-backed gulls, wood pigeon, and the occasional glimpse of the roe deer!  We'll meet at the end location, where you can leave your car. We will then shuttle to the start location. This great riverside venue, at the sea cadets centre in Chester-le-Street, and the address and postcode can be found below. There is a pay and display carpark and the approx. will be £2. Donald Owen Clarke Centre (sea cadets building), Riverside. Chester-le-Street (DH3 3QR)  Your canoe team will meet you at our riverside base. Our venue has changing rooms and toilets.
